Baskets Are the New Vases!

May 3, 2018

To all the cat ladies who became plant ladies, who then turned into basket ladies, this one’s for you!

The natural woven belly basket craze has taken over, and we are all about it! In case you have been living under a rock, a belly basket is a round-woven basket typically made out of natural seagrass material. They are fantastic for decorative storage solutions, and now… flowers!

Yup. This Mother’s Day, we got you covered for the ultimate gift. Instead of simply giving your mom basic flowers, upgrade that arrangement into a basket bouquet that she will go gaga over! We partnered with Urban Stems who has some of the most breathtaking floral arrangements around for our DIY.

To create you will need the following ingredients:

Belly baskets (the Large came from Ikea, and the small came from The Container Store)

-Spray paint (Make sure you use a matte finish)

Metal bucket (Michael’s has a great selection)

Floral Foam

Floral scissors

Fold your belly basket into itself , flip over, and spray on a covered surface (or outside). Because the inside is folded into itself, you will not spray the top, leaving the natural seagrass plain.

Trim your floral oasis foam to the appropriate size of your vessel and submerge into water until it is full.

Once thebaskets are try… let the magic begin!

Since there are a lot of Mothers, step-mothers, sisters, and friends who are all amazing Mother’s in my life, I decided double down on a few of my favorite bouquets from Urban Stems to shower them. Flowers arrive to your doorstep, and simply require some snips at the stems before you start to arrange your basket bouquets.

One by one, be sure to arrange the flowers directly into the floral foam. This will help keep the stems in place and give you control of the overall shape of the arrangement.

PS- never been happier in the studio with all of these gorge stems!

This bouquet is called The Amethyst”. It’s a jewel-toned bouquet that includes some of the most coveted flowers for the season including everyone’s favorite peonies, as well as protea, purple and orange roses, white ranunculus and delicate carnations.

The Catherine, dreamed up by Catherine Piercy, Beauty Director of Vogue.com, is giving serious spring bouquet. You can’t not fall in love with a bevy of peach-colored roses, sweet-smelling tuberose, white peonies, dried lavender, flanked by fresh olive branches.

The Chioma, another wow-factor bouquet from the VOGUE x Urban Stems collab, got it’s name from Vogue’s Fashion News Director Chioma Nnadi’s. It’s a lovely pastel arrangement of yellow spray roses, baby-blue delphiniums, paired with light-colored peonies and ranunculus.

Happy basket painting, Happy flower arranging, but most importantly… Happy Mother’s Day!
